Java was born out of a chance encounter between two of the most driven figures in the premium cigar business. Rocky Patel and Jonathan Drew of Drew Estate met at an industry event, ended up extending their stay in what Drew described as a decidedly unglamorous hotel, and spent an extra day brainstorming a collaboration. Drew Estate was the acknowledged master of infused cigars through their ACID line, and Rocky wanted something unconventional to add to his growing portfolio. The result, introduced in 2004 and released in early 2005, was Java: an aged blend of Nicaraguan long-filler tobacco slowly infused with gourmet mocha during aging, wrapped in an all-Nicaraguan construction. The original Java used a Nicaraguan wrapper and was developed as a medium-bodied cigar that paired naturally with coffee. The database captures the core Java lineup alongside the Latte series, which swaps to a Connecticut shade wrapper and develops a lighter, creamier profile better suited to the latte concept. Both series are built on the same all-Nicaraguan filler and binder, with the wrapper choice delivering notably different smoking experiences. The Wafe vitola, a compact 5 x 20 slim format, was one of the more unusual shapes in the lineup. All Java cigars are made at Drew Estate's La Gran Fabrica in Estelí, Nicaragua.
