The La Gloria Cubana Serie R was introduced in 1999 by Ernesto Perez-Carrillo Jr. as a bold response to cigar smokers seeking full-bodied blends in larger formats. The Serie R is credited as one of the first major premium brands to release a 6x60 as a regular production cigar, helping launch the large ring gauge trend that dominates the market today. The No. 7 vitola was dedicated to his late father, Ernesto Perez-Carrillo Sr. The line has since expanded to six distinct expressions: the original Natural (Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper) and Maduro (Connecticut Broadleaf), each with Dominican-Nicaraguan filler; the Estelí Natural and Estelí Maduro, all-Nicaraguan puros made in Nicaragua; and the Serie R Black Natural and Black Maduro, Nicaraguan puros available in larger formats. All are produced at the El Credito rolling gallery within General Cigar Dominicana in Santiago, or at General's Nicaragua facility for the Estelí and Black expressions.
